Jan van de CAPPELLE , 1626 - 1679

A River Scene with a Large Ferry and Numerous Dutch Vessels at Anchor

Short title: A River Scene with a Large Ferry
Date: about 1665
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 122 x 154.5 cm
Acquisition credit: Wynn Ellis Bequest, 1876

The ferry ('veerpont') in the foreground has a cannon in its cargo. It has a red and white striped ensign and a yellow and white flag draped over the side. Other vessels are flying Dutch colours.

This seascape was probably painted in the mid-1660s, at about the same time as van de Cappelle's 'A River Scene with a Dutch Yacht'.
