Workshop of Dirk BOUTS , 1400? - 1475

The Virgin and Child

Date: about 1465
Medium: Oil with egg tempera on oak
Dimensions: 20.2 x 14.3 cm
Acquisition credit: Presented by Queen Victoria at the Prince Consort's wish, 1863

The Christ Child holds an apple. Behind the Virgin hangs an ornate brocade cloth-of-gold of a type Bouts often uses (see also those in 'The Virgin and Child with Saints' and 'The Virgin and Child').

This is a devotional work probably intended for domestic use. Although the flesh areas are in poor condition, the quality of the rest suggests the work of Bouts himself.
