Meindert HOBBEMA , 1638 - 1709

A Woody Landscape

Date: about 1665
Medium: Oil on oak
Dimensions: 60.4 x 84.3 cm
Acquisition credit: Bought, 1862

This composition is characteristic of Hobbema's approach to landscape painting: a forest scene with a view towards a clearing in the middle distance, illuminated by strong sunlight, and a picturesque farm building in the middle ground.

Another version of this composition (Zurich, Kunsthaus, Ruzicka collection), is dated 1665; the National Gallery's picture was probably painted shortly before.
