Landscape with a Scene of Enchantment

Date: about 1590
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 185 x 206.5 cm
Acquisition credit: Bought, 1944

The subject may be a fantasy loosely based on the Circe story, a version of which features in the 'Argonautica' of Apollonius Rhodius. According to the story, when Odysseus arrived at the island of Aeaea on his journey home from Troy, Circe invited members of his force to a banquet, where she changed them into animals. In the painting, one woman has the head of a hog, another that of a toad, and one has a serpent for a tail.

The companion piece to this painting 'The Sons of Boreas pursuing the Harpies', also seems to derive from the 'Argonautica'. Both works were previously attributed to Ludovico Pozzoserrato.
