Paul CÉZANNE , 1839 - 1906

Hillside in Provence

Date: about 1890-2
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 63.5 x 79.4 cm
Acquisition credit: Bought, Courtauld Fund, 1926

While the specific hillside in Cézanne's native Provence has not been conclusively identified, the wall of angular, jutting rock formations in this painting may represent a quarry, with the cuttings revealing geological strata.

Stylistically, the painting relates to landscapes that Cézanne was painting around Aix-en-Provence in the mid-1880s.

On loan to the exhibition 'Cézanne in Provence' at the National Gallery of Art, Washington from January to May 2006, and the Musée Granet, Aix-en-Provence from June to September 2006.
