The Meeting of Saints Joachim and Anne at the Golden Gate; Charlemagne

Short title: The Meeting at the Golden Gate; Charlemagne
Date: about 1491-4
Medium: Oil on oak
Dimensions: 72 x 59 cm
Acquisition credit: Bought, 1925

The parents of the Virgin are shown embracing at the Golden Gate outside the walls of Jerusalem. It was at this meeting that the Virgin was held to have been miraculously conceived.

This is a fragment of the left-hand side of an altarpiece; the right-hand side, depicting the Annunciation, is in Chicago. The Emperor Charlemagne is included as a saint attendant on the missing central scene. The unpainted upper right-hand edge may originally have been covered by part of the frame.

The artist is named from the triptych in Moulins Cathedral in France, made for the Bourbon court.
