Fra Filippo LIPPI and Workshop , born about 1406; died 1469

The Virgin and Child

Date: about 1450-60
Medium: Egg tempera on wood
Dimensions: 76.6 x 61 cm
Acquisition credit: Presented by Lord Brownlow, 1919

Filippo Lippi and his workshop painted a number of devotional works like this one showing the Virgin and Child.

The coat of arms in the left spandrel is that of the Florentine Strozzi family. It is a later addition and may not have been part of the original commission.

Recent cleaning has revealed that parts of the painting were executed later than the 15th century.
