Augustus and the Sibyl

Date: about 1500
Medium: Oil on wood
Dimensions: 17.5 x 38.5 cm
Acquisition credit: Layard Bequest, 1916

According to a tradition, the Virgin and Child appeared to the Roman Emperor Augustus and one of the Sibyls and pointed out the site of Santa Maria d'Aracoeli, Rome. The Virgin and Child are in the sky at the upper left.It is possible that this panel originally formed part of a piece of furniture.

In the past the work has been attributed to numerous Venetian painters active in the early 15th century, but its condition makes firm attribution difficult. A part of the landscape derives from that in Giovanni Bellini's 'Resurrection' (Berlin, Gemäldegalerie), and the town and bridge recur in the background of Busati's 'The Entombment'.
