This painting is a fragment of the Crucifixion, from the central panel of the Liesborn high altarpiece. This showed Christ crucified with the Virgin and Saints on either side, and angels above against a gold background.

Saints Cosmas and Damian were twins, medical practitioners and martyrs. They were protectors of the Abbey of Liesborn.
