MASTER of LIESBORN , active second half of the 15th century
Saints John the Evangelist, Scholastica and Benedict: Fragment of the Crucifixion Scene
Short title: Saints John the Evangelist, Scholastica and Benedict
Date: probably 1470-80
Medium: Oil on canvas, transferred from oak
Dimensions: 55.9 x 70.8 cm
Acquisition credit: Bought, 1854
This painting is a fragment of the Crucifixion, from the central panel of the Liesborn high altarpiece. This showed Christ crucified with the Virgin and Saints on either side, and angels above against a gold background.
Saint Benedict is shown as an abbot, his sister Scholastica as an abbess. The crook of her crozier is ornamented with the Sacrifice of Isaac, a common parallel to the Crucifixion.
For fuller details of the altarpiece, several parts of which are preserved in the Collection, see 'The Annunciation' by the Master of Liesborn.
