Aert van der NEER , 1603/4 - 1677

A River near a Town, by Moonlight

Date: about 1645
Medium: Oil on oak
Dimensions: 30.3 x 48.4 cm
Acquisition credit: Bequeathed by Lord Colborne, 1854

The ship on the left flies a Dutch flag. Van der Neer specialised in moonlit landscapes, which he painted in large numbers. He managed, however, to maintain a high degree of careful finish and usually signed with his characteristic monogram, as here.

Van der Neer's work is difficult to date with any precision, but this picture was probably painted in the mid-1640s. He made a number of other versions of this composition.
