GERMAN

Edzard the Great, Count of East Friesland

Date: 18th century
Medium: Oil on oak
Dimensions: 48.9 x 36.2 cm
Acquisition credit: Presented by Mrs C.L. Eastlake in memory of her husband, Keeper of the National Gallery, 1907

On the sitter's hat is a brooch with what may be an eagle on it. This is a bust copy in armour of a portrait of a man in robes and with hands, of which the original is purported to be a version in Oldenburg. The identification of the sitter as Edzard the Great, Count of East Friesland (1462 - 1528), who visited the Netherlands in 1516/17, is due to a tradition attached to the Oldenburg picture. The picture may have been painted as late as the 18th century.
