Jacob OCHTERVELT , 1634 - 1682

A Woman standing at a Harpsichord, a Man seated by her

Date: probably 1675-80
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 79.7 x 65.4 cm
Acquisition credit: Presented by Henry J. Pfungst, 1907

Behind the couple hangs a painting of a wooded landscape, and above the doorway is a bust. The woman's dress is the same as the one depicted in 'A Woman playing a Virginal', also in the National Gallery, and its style suggests a date in the late 1670s.

Ochtervelt, who came from Rotterdam, is said to have been, together with Pieter de Hooch, a pupil of Nicolaes Berchem, whose work is also represented in the National Gallery's Collection.
