Workshop of Rogier van der WEYDEN , about 1399 - 1464

Portrait of a Lady

Date: about 1460
Medium: Oil with egg tempera on oak
Dimensions: 37 x 27.1 cm
Acquisition credit: Bequeathed by Mrs Lyne Stephens, 1895

On the reverse is a painting of the head of Christ crowned with thorns (probably from the workshop of Rogier van der Weyden). It is unusual, but not unparalleled, to find a religious image on the reverse of a portrait.

The costume suggests a date after 1460, perhaps around 1466. It also suggests that the sitter is a gentlewoman, rather than a member of the nobility.
