The Flaying of Marsyas

Date: 1616-18
Medium: Fresco, transferred to canvas and mounted on board
Dimensions: 210.2 x 331.4 cm
Acquisition credit: Bought, 1958

For the subject see Ovid, 'Metamorphoses' (6). Apollo defeated the satyr Marsyas in a musical competition; as a punishment for failure, Apollo flayed him.

The picture was originally above the door of the Stanza di Apollo in Villa Aldobrandini, hence its format.

It can reasonably be accepted as an autograph work.
