The Procession of the Trojan Horse into Troy

Date: about 1760
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 38.8 x 66.7 cm
Acquisition credit: Bought, 1918

This and 'The Building of the Trojan Horse', also in the Collection, are part of a series of sketches illustrating a famous passage from Virgil's 'Aeneid' (Book 2): the Trojans, who worship the horse, bring the Greek gift into the City. Later the Greek soldiers emerge and begin the sack of Troy.

Painted presumably about 1760, the two pictures are close in style to the work of the artist's father Giambattista.
