The Building of the Trojan Horse

Date: about 1760
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 38.8 x 66.7 cm
Acquisition credit: Bought, 1918

This and 'The Procession of the Trojan Horse', also in the Collection, are part of a series of sketches illustrating a famous passage from Virgil's 'Aeneid' (Book 2): The Greeks build a wooden horse, fill it with armed men and leave it outside the enemy city of Troy.

Painted presumably about 1760, the two pictures are close in style to the work of the artist's father Giambattista.
