MASTER of LIESBORN , active second half of the 15th century

The Presentation in the Temple

Date: probably 1470-80
Medium: Oil on canvas, transferred from oak
Dimensions: 98.4 x 70.2 cm
Acquisition credit: Bought, 1854

The Virgin comes to the temple in accordance with the Old Testament law of Purification of women after giving birth. She brings the infant Christ who is presented to the Priest Simeon. On the pillars are statues of the Old Testament figures Moses and David (representing Christ's royal lineage). The omission of Saint Joseph is unusual, although this occurs in some other Westphalian pictures.

This painting once formed part of the shutters of the 'Liesborn Altarpiece'. See 'The Annunciation' by the same artist for further information.
