Follower of REMBRANDT , 1606 - 1669

Diana bathing surprised by a Satyr

Date: 17th century
Medium: Oil on oak
Dimensions: 46.3 x 35.4 cm
Acquisition credit: Salting Bequest, 1910

The presence of the hounds suggest that the woman may be the goddess and huntress Diana. One would, therefore, expect the figure behind the tree to be Actaeon but it looks more like a satyr.

This painting was once thought to be by Rembrandt himself but it is, in fact, the work of a follower based on Rembrandt's style of the late 1630s. It was probably painted in about 1640. It has been suggested that the painting is by Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (1621 - 1674) or Govaert Flinck (1615 - 1660) but neither attribution is entirely convincing.
